"There's already a superhero with a red suit, with a lightning bolt on it."
Billy Batson[src]

A protective suit is worn by Barry Allen as the Flash to hide his identity from his enemies when he fights crime.[1] It is red and bears golden lightning bolt design on the chest, backed by a white plate.

"I had just gotten my powers. And i was still putting some finishing touches on my suit."
Barry Allen to Barry Allen[src]

After getting struck by lightning, Barry Allen started working on a prototype suit that he could use without burning his clothes. On december 13, 2013, however, Zod unleashed the Black Zero on Metropolis which started to terraform Earth. Barry would ran to Metropolis with his newly made suit to attempt to save as much people as he could. He would try to save a kid and his parent but he failed to save the latter. After this, he would start to work on a new, more effective suit and scrap this one.

"Uh, yeah, I do competitive ice dancing."
"It's what they use on the space shuttle to prevent it from burning up on reentry."
"I do... very competitive ice dancing."

Barry Allen created the second suit from a sophisticated anti-friction material to protect himself when running at superhuman speeds. The suit is composed of silica-based quartz sand fabric, with Bruce Wayne noting that it is the same composite material that NASA uses to protect spaceships during reentry, in order to avoid burning up from the immense air friction encountered when Barry runs, as well as being cold resistant, in the event that it's exposed to extreme temperatures.[2]

Since becoming a vigilante, Barry has used the suit continuously throughout his heroics, including during the Capture of Captain Boomerang[3] and the War for Earth.[4]

The third suit was created by Alfred Pennyworth and Bruce Wayne to replace Barry's second suit after it was damaged by Girder. In 2022, Barry utilized the suit when helping Batman deal with Al Falcone's pursuit. After dealing with Falcone, Barry wore the suit to continue a phone call with his father after learning that the footage that was supposed to confirm his alibi wouldn't help, with Barry accidently running into the Chronobowl. Eventually, despite being warned by Bruce, Barry used the Chronobowl, while wearing the suit, to go back in time to allow his mother, Nora Allen to live. Afterwards, Barry ran forward to when he initially left, however Barry was kicked out of the Chronobowl in 2013, by a dark speedster.

Upon Barry landing in 2013, he stole a couple's clothes and stored the Flash Suit into his ring. Eventually, Barry teamed up with his younger self to grant him powers, at the cost of Barry's own powers. In the meantime, Barry gave his suit and ring to the younger Barry as he began to teach him how to use his newfound powers. As Barry handed his ring to Barry, he stated that he needed to run into the suit once it launches in the air, however young Barry failed at getting into the suit, before finally putting it on. After putting it on, young Barry commented that the suit was way too tight on his nether regions, before finally getting out.

However, the two Barrys learned that General Zod was invading and realizing that there was little to no Justice League members here, the Barrys teamed up to convince Bruce Wayne to help them free who they think is Superman, needing to infiltrate a Russian facility. After convincing Bruce to help them out, young Barry wore the Flash suit as Barry talked him through using the suit and powers as they ended up saving Kara Zor El instead. As Barry focused on regaining his powers after returning to the Batcave, Young Barry handed the suit back to him when he was successful, after he had made his own suit out of an old Batsuit.

Now with his powers restored and his suit back, Barry wore and used the suit during the Black Zero Event. However, during the fight, Supergirl and Batman were killed, with Zod obtaining the Codex to continue his plans. Not wanting to leave this universe to be destroyed by Zod, the two Barrys used their powers to go back in time to prevent the deaths, however the results ended the exact same, although the Barrys had to deal with Nam-Ek, with Barry tearing off his gloves to help build a strong power surge to kill Nam-Ek.

Eventually, realizing that there was no way to save the Flashpoint universe, Barry eventually fought the Dark version of his past self, with young Barry sacrificing himself to save the original to erase him. Afterwards, Barry went back to fix his initial change before running back with his now damaged suit back to a similar universe to his original.[5]

Alternate universes/timelines[]

Knightmare[]

Knightmare Flash Insurgency list

The Knightmare Flash suit

In Earth's dark apocalyptic future, Barry Allen wears a mechanical version of the suit designed by Bruce Wayne. This suit is more heavily armored and streamlined, while also having a retractable face shield that allows Barry to smash through obstacles without sustaining damage.[6]

With the aid of Cyborg's calculations,[7] the Flash from this possible future was able to run back in time to warn Bruce Wayne of the dangers that Superman could pose. Barry told Bruce that Lois Lane was the key to everything, but soon realized he went too far back for Bruce to understand what he meant. Distraught, Barry hastily told Bruce to gather the future members of the Justice League before he was pulled out of the timestream.[6]

Earth-Prime[]

The Barries compliment each other's suits.

"I like your outfit, it seems, comfy."
"Yours is pretty cool, it seems safe."
"Smooth and breathable."
Flash and Flash[src]

When the Flash found himself face to face with another version of the Flash, the other Flash was wearing his own suit. Flash thought the suit was cosplay in honor of his own suit. They also compliment each other's suits.[8]

Flashpoint Timeline[]

"And what are we wearing tonight?"
"You like it? I-I made it out of that old Batsuit. But you know, I made it our colors and everything. Well, check this out. It's a bit more loose."
"It beeves."

Second Barry suit

Barry Allen makes his suit

This suit was created by Barry Allen from the Flashpoint Timeline using an old version of the Batsuit in the Batcave. After Bruce attempted to give the suit to the alternate Barry to help him survive their attempt to restore his powers, with Allen refusing, Barry took the suit instead. As the other Barry recovered after the successful restoration of his powers, Barry spray painted over the suit red, with yellow lightning bolts paired with yellow and black electrical tape around the waist and forearms and additional padding, finally cutting off the ears from the cowl. Upon the older Barry recovered from his injuries, Barry returned the Flash Ring and his suit to Barry, admitting he liked how the suit fitted him better.

Barry wore the suit during the Battle at the Edwards Air Force Base, briefly having trouble turning his head in the cowl, teaming up with the other Barry to take down the Sword of Rao as Supergirl fought Dru-Zod. Unfortunately, the fight resulted in both Batman and Supergirl being killed, and Zod continuing to terraform the Earth. Not wanting to accept the defeat Barry, used his powers to go into the Chronobowl back in time with the older one following him to try again.

However, the fight resulted in the same exact result, with Barry being impaled in the forearm by a shard of Nam-Ek's armor, with his speed healing implanting it in Barry's skin and suit. Still not giving up, Barry attempted to try again over and over, causing more Kryptonian blade shrapnel to cover the suit, and Barry tearing the neck of the cowl so he could move his head better. Despite wanting to try again still, the older Barry tried to talk Barry out of it to no avail, however, when realizing that the Dark Flash, a future version of himself, was about to kill the original Barry, young Barry sacrificed himself to save him with his suit being buried with Barry in the Chronobowl as Barry fixed the Flashpoint timeline to a similar timeline to his[5]

Dark Flash[]
Dark Flash Concept Art 1

This version of the suit is the future version of Barry's Flashpoint suit, which after many failures of saving his friends, resulted in his suit being completely covered in Kryptonian shrapnel and blades. After making sure that Barry ended up causing the events that led to his creation, Dark Flash returned to the Chronobowl, to take out the now useless Barry to make sure he didn't revert the Flashpoint timeline so he could finally save his friends. However, when Dark Flash tried to finish off Barry, his past self, sacrificed himself to save Barry, causing Dark Flash along with his suit to be erased from existence.

Designs[]

Homemade Suit[]

Barry's initial suit was made up of his normal clothes, with a white ski mask, helmet, and elbow and knee pads, to withstand his speed and protect him from impacts.

Upgraded Suit[]

As his superhero alter ego the Flash, however, Barry wears a form-fitting red suit that covers his entire body and head. It has a fitted face mask that covers his head, but leaves his mouth and eyes exposed, with there also being wing-shaped earpieces. His body is covered entirely with protection pads scattered across the suit in various places, such as the torso, to better protect Barry, with the joints areas free for movement so he can run with little restriction. There is a white circle with a yellow lightning bolt in the center of the chest. Barry wears the same Flash suit when working with the Justice League.[4]

Micro Compression Suit[]

After his suit was damaged from his fight with Girder, Batman gave the new suit to Barry. Unlike the armored suit, this suit, similar to the Earth-Prime version, is mainly fabric, with a hidden piping that spreads out from the emblem. The suit also has golden paneling on the boots of the suit with Lightning styled braces around the forearms, helmet wings, emblem, and belt. The piping although glows yellow when Flash actively uses his Speed Force abilities, with the suit causing his normal Blue Lightning to glow Yellow instead. The suit is also able to decompress into the Flash Ring, immediately expanding into a full suit upon the ring being open, along with helping properly store the energy he builds from running.

Knightmare Suit[]

In the Knightmare timeline, Barry's suit was made up of his initial suit with more technological armor plates on top, with a face shield which folds over his cowl, the suit also has two straps over the chest plates.

Prime Suit[]

In Earth-Prime, Barry's suit is an entire friction-resistant fabric suit, with Hermes style wings poking out of the cowl, paired with a simplified emblem and a lightning bolt styled belt and forearm clasp. The suit also has 2 gold pipping sections wrapping from his shoulders to the belt. The suit was later upgraded with entire golden boots, replacing red boots with lightning braces on the top. It can also store into it's own Flash Ring.

Modified Batsuit[]

In the Flashpoint timeline, Barry used a unused Batsuit to mirror his other version's suit, with him sawing off the nose and ears, along with spray painting the suit red, with small lightning bolts on the chest and boot sides. Allen also added yellow and black arrow electrical tape around the waist and forearms along with, his gold headphones, and Knee and Elbow pads. During the Black Zero Event Barry lost the headphones and later tore off the neck of the suit to allow him to easily remove the cowl and turn his head better.

Dark Flash Suit[]

Finally, Dark Flash's suit is comprised of many Kryptonian blades and shrapnel, which covered up chunk of his original Batsuit. Meanwhile, through over 40 years of constant moving to save his friends also resulted in the red paint to melt off while the suit warped and melted over him. In addition, Dark Flash's energy allows some of the blades to glow through the suit, making up the eyes and lightning symbol on the chest.

Capabilities[]

The Flash suits have numerous function to help Barry in his crime fighting duties:

  • Friction and Abrasion Resistance: The suit's primary function is to protection Barry from the rigors of moving at high speed. The suit's composition allows it to withstand extreme friction and impacts.
  • Electrical Charge Dissipation: The suit designed by Bruce and Alfred dissipates the powerful electrical charge that Barry builds up when he runs, seemingly altering the natural blue colouration to a golden yellow as a side effect.
  • Eye Protection: The suit designed by Bruce and Alfred has retractable cowl lenses that protect Barry's eyes as he runs.
  • Body Calorie Display: The suit designed by Bruce and Alfred has a wrist display that dictates Barry's calorie and energy reserves, indicating if said reserves are full or depleted.
  • Storage: The suit designed by Bruce and Alfred seemingly has a concealed compartment on the rear for storing, as seen when Barry places his stuffed monkey in there.

Trivia[]

  • The Knightmare suit bears a resemblance to the Flash's Earth-1098 counterpart.
  • Unlike the various Flash suits from DC Comics (and most other appearances of the Flash), the upgraded suit isn't a singular piece of protective material, instead, it's made from a collection of pieces bolted together.
  • The upgraded suit seems to take inspiration from its counterparts seen in the Injustice universe, as well as the suit seen in DC Universe Online, serving as a more functional piece of 'armor'.
  • The micro compression and prime suit are the most comic accurate suits Flash suits seen in the DCEU.
  • The micro compression suit is the only Flash suit in the DCEU to show some padded muscularity.

Behind the Scenes[]

"Barry's sewn together layers of netting and synthetic material that can be both flexible and heat resistant. He's trying to make something that's aerodynamic and reduces friction as much as possible. I like the idea that he's cobbling together this suit; it's his DIY self-preservation suit."
―Ezra Miller on Flash's suit in Justice League[src]
  • In total, the suit is comprised of over 100 individual pieces.[9]
