"I had a dream. It was the end of the world. I think it's something more... something darker
"I had a dream. It was the end of the world. I think it's something more... something darker." ―Bruce Wayne, Zack Snyder's Justice League
This article or section is about the Knightmare future. This is a potential future that may not necessarily follow the primary timeline.
For alternate versions of Batman, see Batman's Character Hub.

"You know, it's funny that you would talk about people who died in my arms because when I held Harley Quinn and she was bleeding and dying, she begged me with her last breath that when I killed you, and make no mistake, I will fucking kill you... that I'd do it slow. I'm gonna honor that promise."
―Batman to the Joker[src]

Bruce Wayne, better known as the Batman, was a former vigilante and billionaire CEO whose world was shattered by Darkseid and Superman's conquest of Earth, prompting him to found the Insurgency to fight back against them.

Biography[]

Darkseid's victory[]

"You need me to help you undo this world you created by letting her die. Poor Lois. How she suffered so! I often wonder how many alternate timelines do you destroy the world because... frankly, you don’t have the cojones to die yourself."
Joker to Batman[src]

In a dark possible future, Lois Lane was killed at the hands of DarkseidSuperman, in his grief, succumbed to the Anti-Life Equation and under Darkseid's orders took over Earth and founded an organization known as the Regime to act as a sort of government. The Justice League was effectively destroyed, forcing Batman, the Flash, and a mortally wounded Cyborg into hiding and leading to the apparent demises of Aquaman and Wonder Woman. To aid in Darkseid's totalitarian crusade, Superman founded the Regime Stormtroopers army, killing anyone who opposed him.

Now in hiding, Batman and his allies formed the Insurgency, a rebellion against the totalitarian Regime. They traveled the world searching for allies to join their cause, and while they fought valiantly, their numbers slowly dwindled over the years, and Earth was transformed into an apocalyptic wasteland. At some point, Batman held Harley Quinn in his arms as she died in agony, begging her before dying to slowly kill the Joker.[1]

Encounter with the Joker[]

Knightmare Batman - ZSJL

Batman reunites the Insurgency in an abandoned bridge.

"Where are we holding up?"
"Somewhere he'll never suspect."
"Still think it was a good idea bringing him along?"
"What do you think?"
Deathstroke and Batman[src]

Planning to use a cosmic treadmill to send Flash back in time and prevent their future, the Insurgency camouflaged themselves in the rubble of an abandoned bridge, before coming out of hiding to continue their plan. When Mera revealed her desire to take down Superman, Wayne tried to reassure her, urging her to stick with her plan to succeed. However, the Joker interrupted the conversation by saying that Wayne had already lost a loved one and companion whom he had murdered.

Batman listens to Joker.

Wayne confronted his archenemy by stating that he had limits and acknowledging that he had long since "dead inside." Eventually, the Joker offered him a truce to work together, which Wayne accepted, mentioning that they were talking about people who had died in his arms and reminding him how Harley Quinn begged him before she He died to slowly murder the Joker. At that, Cyborg detected that Superman was approaching, and alerted the group even though it was already late, Superman arriving at the scene to finish them off with his heat vision.[1] However, Batman managed to survive, along with Cyborg and Flash and somehow could to escape and hide with them inside a bunker, near the ruins of Wayne Manor.[2]

The kryptonite trap[]

"Did you get it? The rock?"
―Batman[src]

With only a few contacts left across the globe, an aging Batman, now living on the underground bunker, received news that the remaining Insurgents found a piece of Kryptonite, a possible last hope of defeating Superman. Filled with newfound hope and strength, Batman ordered the rock be brought to him. Days later, an Insurgency convoy approached, which Batman watched from above his bunker.

Batman met with them and asked for the rock they were tasked to retrieve. However, it turned out to be an ambush and Bruce was held at gunpoint by one of his lieutenants as the undercover Regime agents revealed themselves. The remorseful stormtrooper holding Batman at gunpoint apologized, but did not let down his guard as the other Stormtroopers mercilessly executed Batman's Insurgents agents as he watched helplessly. Roaring in despair, Batman began a one-man assault on the Stormtroopers. Although he managed to take down most of the troopers, a swarm of Parademons invaded the area, abducting many of his resistance fighters. Batman was eventually overwhelmed as the remaining Regime troops finally began to restrain him. Relentless in his assault, Batman began dispatching the troopers, breaking limbs and even snapping one of their necks, but then was brutally beaten down and restrained by reinforcements. Seeing the Stormtroopers' inability to restrain him, a Parademon knocked him unconscious from behind.[2]

The fall of the bat[]

"She was my world. And you took her from me."
Superman to Batman[src]

Batman awoke chained up in a bunker with his remaining agents, eyeing them helplessly just before Superman arrived, landing in the bunker as his Regime Stormtroopers reverently knelt before their general. Approaching Batman, Superman swiftly murdered the last Insurgents with his heat vision. Superman then unmasked the vigilante, expressing his anger over Bruce for letting Lois die, as she was his "world." Superman gave him one final sneer, placing his hand flat against his chest, then brutally ended the life of Bruce Wayne by tearing out his heart.[2]

Posthumous victory[]

Despite the death of Batman, Flash and Cyborg, two of the last insurgents still free managed to start the cosmic treadmill, and send a message to Batman's past self, however they retreated much sooner than expected,[2] although the message gives rise to a possible hope of correcting the timeline,[1] making Batman's years of effort and sacrifice worth something in the end.

Personality[]

"I've been dead inside a long time, but even I have a limit."
―Batman to the Joker[src]

This Batman was a born survivor in a war that seemed to have no end, which made him a seasoned fighter, and a cautious leader who would be willing to swallow his grudge and work with his old archenemy the Joker to save the world.

However, the years of failure made him angry, harsh, and somewhat melancholic, willing to kill his former friend, although he himself was also another victim of Darksaid's control. He too would not accept defeat and was quick to massacre numerous Regime Stormtroopers immediately after they murdered several of his own Insurgents.

But most of all, Bruce was scared. Terrified that the Insurgency would lose and Darkseid would win. The final expression on his face, while at first appearing angry, clearly turns into a longer look of pure horror.

However this led him to be very cautious, and before leaving for his final destination he made sure that the backup plan to correct the past could continue correctly without him.

Abilities[]

  • Peak human condition: Wayne went through intense training, and in an alternate timeline where he was somewhat further weaker from being even older, the Regime Stormtroopers, with only Deathstroke being on par.
    • Peak human strength:
      Batman beaten down

      Batman snapping a man's neck

In his vision of an apocalyptic future (where Batman is somewhat older and weaker), mere swings from his gun launched the Regime Stormtroopers in the air and his kick broke one's leg and knocked him out. Notably, he could still break the neck of a Regime Stormtrooper] with his bare hands in mere seconds, while being restrained, and he could still overpower many Regime Stormtroopers] before being ultimately defeated by their sheer numbers.
    • Peak human durability: In his nightmarish vision of a possible future, Batman also remained unfazed after an immense beating at the hands of the Regime Stormtroopers and only gritted his teeth in frustration, with it taking a superhumanly strong blow from a Parademon to knock Batman out.
  • Expert marksman: In his nightmarish vision of a possible future, Batman was highly proficient with conventional firearms in close quarters, wielding both a handgun and a rifle, as well as repeatedly disarming Regime stormtroopers of their assault rifles, using them as his own. When his sidearm ran out of ammunition, he threw it with enough accuracy to briefly stun a stormtrooper.
"Be very careful with the next thing you say."
―Batman to the Joker[src]
  • Intimidation: To be added
"I understand how you feel, Mera. But we have to stick to the plan to have any chance to make this right."
―Batman to Mera[src]
  • Master tactician: Batman held out with his Insurgency for a lengthy time in the war against the more powerful Regime.
  • Master leader: Batman is an extremely skilled leader, he spent fighting crime along with his proteges, to lead the Insurgency against Superman's regime for a lengthy amount of time despite the superior military power of Superman's organization.
  • Indomitable will: When the malevolent Superman enforces totalitarian rule upon Earth with his Regime, Batman promptly establishes and lead the Insurgency against him, refusing to submit to the alien tyrant even when his Insurgent forces are eventually defeated by the Regime Stormtroopers, leaving Batman helpless and at Superman's mercy. Batman later refused to stay down when Superman knocked him to the ground repeatedly during their duel, persisting until he finally won and had the weakened Kryptonian at his mercy.

Equipment[]

Weapons and gadgets[]

  • Colt MK IV Series 80: Batman armed himself with a Colt MK IV Series 80 pistol when leading his insurgency against Superman and the regime stormtroopers in a war shown in a vision of an alternate future. He used this gun to kill an insurgency traitor and a few stormtroopers before discarding it to use a Heckler & Koch G36C assault rifle.
  • FN SCAR-L: Batman armed himself with an FN SCAR-L rifle when leading his insurgency against Superman and the regime stormtroopers. Batman tied the letter the Joker gave him to the butt of this gun with duct tape.
  • Heckler & Koch G36C: Batman armed himself with a Heckler and Koch G36C assault rifle during a fight with the regime stormtroopers in a war shown in a vision of an alternate future. He took this gun off a stormtrooper and used it to kill several stormtroopers before being disarmed and captured.
