The Amazons are an elite female race of warriors that occupy the island of Themyscira. Created by Zeus, they were Mankind's defense against the manipulations of Ares. However, following the War of the Gods, the Amazons seceded from the world, forever training for their battle against the God of War.
Although the Amazons and human females look the same, they are very different. The Amazons have several superhuman abilities that are superior to a normal human being. The most important of their abilities is superhuman strength, although it varies: while the average Amazon has strength to fight any human, the most developed warriors, like Hippolyta, Antiope, Menalippe and Artemis have strength that is a little higher and can dominate the low level Amazons (or in the case of Antiope, to fight an Amazonian demigoddess to a remarkable degree).
In addition, their other physical abilities, such as speed, agility, endurance and coordination, are superior to a human's.
Another of their capabilities is superhuman durability and resistance to pain; however, it varies again: while the average Amazon can withstand blows from other Amazons, the most advanced ones are able to resist even the divine power of a demigoddess, since Antiope only had minor injuries after Wonder Woman sent her flying with a blast of divine energy from her bracelets. However, Amazons can be injured by sharp objects, such as bullets, swords and arrows, but only if the object is thrown with enough force to penetrate their armor and skin.
Although they can survive severe physical punishment more than a normal human being, they can be hurt or damaged. That is where their regenerative ability comes in handy: it allows them to heal much faster than a normal human being; however, they can not regenerate punctured organs or amputated limbs and bullets can kill them if they hit a certain spot.
The Amazons also have a form of immortality, very similar to longevity. This allows them to live for eternity without visibly aging, and they are not affected by human diseases; however, they can be killed through conventional means, such as combat.
The Amazons maintain regular melee weapons, such as swords, axes, spears and shields. Shields are capable of deflecting shots easily, and swords can cut even the toughest of metals. The Amazons also have extremely durable armor, which gives them greater protection in battle and protects them from sharp objects.
The Amazons were created by the Olympian Gods led by Zeus with the intention of spreading love and compassion throughout the world to counter Ares' attempts to malevolently corrupt Mankind. They brought a brief period of peace upon the world.
Roughly 25 millennia before the War of the Gods, the Amazons joined with the Atlanteans and Humanity in fighting off an Apokoliptan invasion of Earth led by Steppenwolf and his massive Parademon army. Before being forced to depart, Steppenwolf left behind three Mother Boxes, and each of the three factions of the army that helped save Earth would be given one of them.
As Ares slowly became engulfed in his jealousy towards mankind, his corruption of humanity led to their betrayal of the Amazons. The Amazon's we were forced into enslavement by the very people they were created to protect. Rallied under the leadership of Hippolyta, the Amazons freed themselves from captivity, while the Olympians were slowly slain by Ares, who'd been banished to the realm of Man by his father in their final duel and severely crippled and unable to regain his strength.
As the War of the Gods neared its end, princess Diana was born as the daughter of Zeus and Queen Hippolyta. Zeus used the last of his power to create the island of Themyscira where the Amazons would be safe from Ares, able to train for their eventual return to the realm of Man and the battle against the God of War. Diana also was eventually trained in combat tactics by her aunt, Antiope, to fulfill her role as the God Killer her father created her to be so that she would be able to defeat Ares and finally rid the world of his manipulations.
